Foot Posture Basics
What is Normal Foot Posture?
When many people visit podiatrists, they are informed that they do not have a normal alignment of the foot and hence need orthoses to correct this. Correcting alignment was, for some time, the key focus of orthoses use but then came the question – what is normal?
In fact, is there such as thing as “normal” or should we consider foot posture as a risk factor for “functional” symptoms around the foot. Even if we align a foot, there maybe areas that need correcting further up along the leg.
Therefore there has been a shift from correcting alignment to identifying where the symptoms are coming from, what other areas might be contributing to it and how to correct function rather than having everyone in “perfect alignment”.
